Not everyone wants to wear a suit and have a computer terminal for an intimate working companion. Others crave adventure, the great outdoors, and even worms…

Vermiculturist

Do you like worms? Would you like to work with worms? Yes? Well, vermiculture could be just what you have been looking for as it is the practice of worm farming and worm composting.

Worms are valuable to gardeners and fishermen and by nurturing the wiggly little fellows you will be carrying out a very useful, environmentally important function.

Worms aerate soil and in doing so make it more fertile. Many gardeners compost garden waste and kitchen waste with compost heaps, sheet composting or some other method during the growing season.

Fortunately, very little yard waste is generated during winter months when cold temperatures make composting difficult. However, usable kitchen waste is constantly being generated and must be disposed of. Vermicomposting is the process of using worms and micro-organisms to turn kitchen waste into a black, earthy-smelling, nutrient-rich humus.

It is unlikely that you will see a job advertisement for "Wanted worm expert" - If you would like to be a Vermiculturist you probably need to start your own business and then you can tell all your friends "hey, I've got worms!"

Chocolate taster

All food-producing companies have product tasters who sample the food to make sure that it is up to standard. To some people tasting chocolate would be a dream job, all day nibbling new types of chocolate and writing reports highlighting each varieties good and bad points. But you can always have too much of a good thing…

To get into the industry you need a science/maths degree and 10+ years experience in a food-related industry and the ability to taste something and describe it vividly and a good sense of smell. Tip: Stay away from the everlasting Gobstoppers

Trichologist

Trichology is the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and disorders of the hair and scalp. Basically they are dandruff doctors…

In the trichologist's work, the health of the skin is as important as the hair and they may need to deal with flaky or oily skin conditions as well as hair loss. Few people realise the importance of their hair - it may be primarily a cosmetic feature, but as such, it plays an important part in personal presentation. As a result, problems in this area can be acutely embarrassing, leading to low self-esteem and even depression.

Karaoke party host

As hard as you may try it is impossible to avoid Karaoke; it is in your local and at your best mate’s party. Started in Japan in the 80s, Karaoke is the singing of a famous song over the top of a backing track for the amusement/torture of others.

Karaoke is hugely popular and the events have to be organised by someone. That someone could be you!

Being a Karaoke host requires an enormous amount of self-confidence and possibly a spangley suit. Your primary role is to raise the venues party spirit and to coax a possibly shy audience onto a stage to perform. Depending on how forthcoming the audience is you may have to do the first song yourself to show them how it is done - or possibly the first hour if the audience prove reluctant - or even the whole night if it goes very badly!

Painting conservator

Removing the rigours of time from an old painting is as much of an art form as creating the painting in the first place. This can be painstaking work requiring the conservator to apply many different treatments and techniques to restore the painting fully.

It is meticulous work that requires patience and skill as well as a wealth of knowledge of the art world and restoration techniques.

Training to be a fully qualified painting conservator takes between five and ten years, a period which includes studying art, art history or natural sciences.

Go for it!

There are some weird and wonderful jobs out there many of which you will not even realise exist. If you are interested in an area that doesn't currently employ, maybe you should start your own enterprise and be the first to do that job.
