WorkingAbroad - Is it an option?
Steve Holmes has created CVs for people going to and coming from places as far afield as Japan, Korea, South Africa, New Zealand, the USA, all of Europe and Papua New Guinea!
Have you heard fabulous yarns of luxury villas and tax-free salaries? Would you like to work abroad and is it possible?

This transition is one requiring realism. Expatriate salaries have fallen in relative terms since the heady days of the Middle East boom and Far East opportunities are affected by economic crises. The USA, New Zealand, Australia and Canada all have fairly elaborate immigration rules which will require careful investigation and you should avoid paying out large sums of upfront money to agencies who say they will find you a job; there are reputable companies who will help you with the documentation, but nobody has a wide open door to employment.

Having said that, hundreds of thousands of Britons make a good living from working abroad; usually they have prior experience and in-demand skills at more senior professional levels. Going as a backpacker doing casual work is one thing; achieving a full expat salary is less straightforward and you must bear in mind that in some countries educational standards are even higher than they are in the UK. Also, there are qualified nurses, accountants, teachers, sales people, managers and I.T. specialists from developing and former Eastern Block countries who can do the job and will work for less.

There are clubs you can join to get information and lists of available jobs; there are magazines and newspapers which help people find work abroad; both of these are most useful for technical specialisations such as engineering, the traditional expat occupation. Other occupations will usually need to do some of the legwork themselves:

You can visit your target country, taking a CV with you, making contacts, bringing back the relevant Yellow Pages and information from professional organisations to mount a concerted campaign of speculative approaches. You can search the internet. You can contact embassies and trade organisations.

Next you make sure that your CV and professional statement/application letter are clear enough for a national in your target country to understand who you are and what you want. You will need a fax at home for return contact or a simply formatted document for Internet contacts. Your material must show an understanding of the country and industries sector within that country so that people feel that you can contribute immediately.

I have clients who operate as management consultants internationally; these are experienced people who have many years behind them, not newcomers who happen to think that being British and having an MBA should get them a job anywhere. You may have to prove yourself to begin with and it may take patient networking to find the right people. Put yourself in their place, taking you on trust; think of yourself as an explorer in the adventure of foreign contacts and forget any idea that it will be easy and somebody can arrange it all for you.

You can do it if your approach is right.
