Pensions Team, Solicitor/Associate - Birmingham/London - Job Description
Main Purpose of Job:
Working in one the UK's largest and strongest pensions teams, advising on a broad range of principally non-contentious pensions work.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
This role will involve acting for major corporates or trustees of pension schemes providing advice on all areas of pensions law, including:
* Drafting scheme documentation (e.g. establishing CARE schemes and deeds of amendment);
* Legislative changes including tax simplification issues and the Pensions Bill;
* Pension scheme mergers;
* Scheme wind ups;
* Scheme changes (e.g. reducing accrual or increasing member contributions);
* Investment issues, such as investment management agreements;
* TUPE issues;
* Corporate support.
You will take responsibility for managing client relationships and focus on delivering an excellent service to your clients in addition to getting the law right. You will support our ethos that relationships are everything and relationships are unique.
In relation to your fee-earning work, you will meet your personal time recording targets and manage the financial aspects of matters you are responsible for efficiently (i.e. billing and cash collection).
You will be involved in the marketing efforts of the pensions team. You will attend industry events regularly and organise get togethers with multipliers (such as actuaries and independent trustees) in order to develop your personal profile, and that of the team. You will also take a proactive approach to writing articles and delivering seminars.
You will take responsibility for your training and development with our full support. You will seek to develop the knowledge of the whole team by sharing your experience and research, including by giving training sessions to the team.
Key Skills and Experiences:
The ideal candidate for this role will be a qualified solicitor with:
* Demonstrable post qualification experience gained in the field of pensions law at a firm / department with a proven reputation in this field
* An excellent understanding of the principal provisions in relevant pensions legislation
* Experience of taking an active role in building and maintaining client relationships
* Experience of participating in client development events
* A clear understanding of the importance of accurate and efficient financial management
* Experience of assisting partners and associates with a broad range of marketing and profile raising initiatives.
* Experience of assisting other team members with writing technical articles and the presentation of seminars and other briefing sessions.
* A developed understanding of the commercial issues impacting on a client's business.
