in 1972 by Peter Simon. The original focus was on clothes with ethnic
origins, which were sourced from India and the Far East. Combining modern
design expertise with traditional materials and techniques, the company
launched a range of colourful hand-block printed clothing in natural cotton.
In May 1973, the first Monsoon
shop opened in Beauchamp Place, Knightsbridge, London.
In 1984, Monsoon
launched Accessorize, an exciting
and strongly differentiated High Street concept for fashion accessories
whose product range has a distinctive handwriting.
Monsoon has expanded
rapidly from its London base. By May 2000 there will be 135 Monsoon
UK stores, 27 overseas and 1 Monsoon
Home store. Further outlets have opened successfully in Australia, Denmark,France,
Malta, Gibraltar, Iceland, the Middle East, New Zealand and the USA.
The Product Range
has developed a strong brand with a highly distinctive identity. The intrinsic
beauty of fabric, colour and technique so evident in the early sourcing
of Monsoon's products from the Far East continues to exercise a strong

Natural fibres such as cotton, silk and wool and highly intensive handwork
including embroidery, batik and beading are still an integral part of
the range, which is further enhanced by the innovative use of contemporary

Today, the range is sourced from different countries, with producers selected
for reliability and guaranteed quality. The widening of the range together
with a growing emphasis on high standards of tailoring, has led to a larger
proportion of the Monsoon
ranges being sourced from within the UK and Europe.

Monsoon is proud
of it's loyal team of long serving management and staff. Motivation is
a high priority, and people are actively encouraged to develop their talents,
to take responsibility for decisions and to put into practice the company's

The Management Team includes five Divisional Directors. The Board Directors
are Monsoon's founder Peter Simon, John Spooner and Andrew May is the
Group Finance Director.
Peter Simon is Monsoon's Executive Chairman. He has led the development
and growth of the business over the past 27 years. As the originator of
the Monsoon ethos
he is particularly involved in Monsoon's product development and design.
John Spooner, Monsoon's Managing Director, has been with the company for
over 16 years. He is responsible for its day to day operational management
and business management.
Andrew May is Monsoon's Finance Director. He joined the company 20 years
ago and is responsible for finance, treasury, internal audit and information
