Talking point - job hunter and recruiter news

Getting to know you – new social network buttons

Do you struggle to capture all of the information that you want a potential employer to know about you in a 1-2 page CV? You want to include all of your relevant qualifications, work experience and training but you also want to include details about you as a person – to help you stand out from the other candidates and show how you’d fit with the organisation.

Great news – we’ve got a new tool that might help you with this common dilemma. When you apply for a job on Jobsite, you can now add links to your Twitter and LinkedIn profiles. This will help to enhance your application with additional information about you. For example, LinkedIn shows recommendations of you and your work from colleagues and clients, and can demonstrate your connections in your career and industry sector. Twitter can also help to showcase the people that you know and your thoughts on things happening in your sector, as well as showing more of your personality.

By enabling recruiters to take a quick look at your LinkedIn and Twitter profiles, it may also help to ensure that you don’t waste your time attending interviews for positions that you really aren’t suitable for. For example, if a recruiter can see how much you value time with your family they will realise that you won’t be happy in an organisation with an inflexible working structure. This means you can concentrate your effort on attending interviews with firms that think you’re the ideal candidate for them. Good news for you and good news for recruiters. Jobsite – It’s a Win-Win Situation

Well what a week for Jobsite! Let’s start with the facts. Best Job Board – FACT, Recruitment International 5-a-side Champions – FACT.

The success started on Thursday when Jobsite won the “Best Job Board” award at the first ever Recruitment Consultant Awards. The award was for the job board that was the most user-friendly and well-designed for job seekers, has added functionality and dares to stand out from the crowd. We were up against stiff competition, so were very proud to bring the award back to Hampshire to be placed on the Jobsite mantelpiece.

It is truly a fantastic award for Jobsite as it recognises that we help to make job hunting quick & easy and is proof that we are seen as an innovative job board that stands out from our competitors. It also demonstrates that Jobsite is performing for candidates, which is a major factor in helping recruiters decide which job board to use.

Whilst we are on the subject of performance, Team Jobsite was invited to partake in the Recruitment International 5-a-side at Goals in Wimbledon yesterday. Over 30 teams were invited to play but there would only be one winner.

My work placement at Jobsite

My name is Anthony Packer and, like my colleague Nick, I’ve been on the “Premier League Into Work” course run by the Jobcentre and Portsmouth Football Club. They are helping people like me and Nick to get back into work.

I’ve just finished my 2 week placement at Jobsite’s head office in Havant, and was working in the Business Intelligence Department as an Analyst, where I assisted with collecting data at Jobsite and entering the data into spreadsheets. It’s not something I’ve done before, but that’s one of the advantages of being put on a placement, you can try doing something that you might not have thought about doing before and it gives you opportunities.

We’ve come a long way since the Commodore 64 – TRU London II

You may have heard some noise about commodore64TRU London II which was held at the end of last week. Jobsite was Platinum Sponsor of it and I went along in my capacity as, well, ‘Head Geek’ I suppose, to gain and impart as much knowledge as possible from the engineering point of view. This was an Unconference so far more participant driven than a typical event like this. Perfect. (However, slightly more chaotic – see my pic of lunch below)

Lunch at TruLondon

Lunch at TruLondon

A strong theme behind this event was social media. There is a lot of talk about this in the industry and a multitude of people self-labelling themselves as ‘Social Media Experts’. What technologies are being developed? Should we be Twittering, Facebooking, Linked-In-ing? Where are we going with all this?

Twitter was pervasive. For a start, pretty much everyone present was tweeting (including me)and they were being projected onto the wall as the event unfolded. Some businesses are streaming jobs into Twitter and claiming some success. We have our own targeted ‘Jobs By Twitter’ system which we were casually demonstrating.

Can the Premier League help you get back to work?

My name is Nick Warne and I was one of the first people to take part in the Premier League Into Work programme at Portsmouth Football Club. It’s a 10 week course to Back to work 1support people like me who are over 25 and haven’t been able to find work for the last six months. It’s a brand new idea from the Premier League and is currently being trialled with four football clubs (Portsmouth, Chelsea, Sunderland and Everton) with the support of their local Jobcentre Plus.

I wasn’t sure what to expect at first but it’s been such a great experience for me that I wanted to tell you a little more about it in case it’s something that could help you too.

For me, the course ran on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays for a total of 15 hours. Morning sessions were held at the Pompey Study Centre by Portsmouth’s ground Fratton Park, with afternoon physical training sessions held at a local leisure centre.

At the study centre we were given advice and did practise sessions around things like CV writing, health and safety, employer expectations, interview techniques, team building and first aid.
