I haven’t been working for over 4 years after having had a baby. I was previously a telecommunications engineer and unfortunately the industry has moved on in terms of many working practices and technologies. Although I kept in touch by reading articles, I haven’t had any practical experience since. I have been looking for 6 months and am now worried that I’m not getting a job because I don’t have the working experience.

I was made redundant at the age of 52, having worked all my life. Since then I have spent a considerable amount of time searching for a job. As the refractories industry I was in has all but disappeared, the chances of a job in that industry are pretty remote. So I retrained – completed a PhD and after a further 4 years am still looking for a job.
The reason appears that I am either too qualified for the jobs in question, don’t have enough experience in the aerospace industry. If I can’t get a job with qualifications, experience how am I supposed to work until I am 75? The government tells us that we are not saving enough for our pension (I am not old enough to draw that yet at 57) but there does not appear to be any employer out there willing to employ older people, so how are we supposed to save?
