Returning from Self Employment

13 Years ago, after an 8 year stint with Microsoft UK, I started my own small Retail/Repair PC outlet in Essex, during the 13 enjoyable years, i focussed on 1 rule, Customer Satisfaction, whether it be the end user at home, or a Golbal Support Contract, Last December 2006 an ex employee of mine kindly emptied over £30k from the Business Account, emptied also my personal account and put my card to its limit, He is now serving his sentence HMP , but i almostlost my house, and out of desperation, sadly had to sell my established Business.
Since then i am applying online through web sites like this, but i have not even had an interview, I have BSc (Hons) Information Technology, MCSE, and soon finishing my MCSA, Maybe it’s my style or approch to companies, but because it’s been a long time since i applied for employment i am starting to get very dis-heartened, as my skill and knowledge level is excellent, as is my Customer Relations Skills, I just dont know where i am going wrong, I am almost 40 now, is it my age?
I thought Vista was going to make available thousands of IT vacancies(so i read) Can anyone give me any pointers please, i specialise in PDA,Laptop,Networking, HTML,XML,Java and pretty much anything IT related, what am i doing wrong?
Thanks in advance to any replies

Teaching Today

I am a second year English teacher earning around £23,000 a year at the moment, but the salary goes up every year up to £32,000.
But what other job could i do with a similar paypacket? I’m fed up with the dreadful behaviour of students and lack of support from management, and at the age of 50 I’m not sure I’d be accepted for retraining?

Slivers-of-Time

I love the way technology keeps evolving! When Jobsite started back in 1995 we were constantly having to explain to people what the Internet was. Since then the world has got used to animations in sites, online shopping, video streaming and facilities we couldn’t have possibly described 12 years ago.

So what’s next? At Jobsite we’re excited about technology that enables something called “Slivers-of-Time Working”. It’s been funded by the government and we’re the exclusive partner helping to roll it out across the UK. This is about websites, run by recruitment agencies, where anyone can sell their spare hours to local employers. It’s one area of technological development where the UK leads the world. Government research shows a staggering need for this ultra-flexible workstyle. It’s exciting to watch it spreading through the UK. Think of it….you become an ebay seller…but not of your goods…of your own spare hour here and there.

Automotive Industry Woes

I am currently working in the Automotive industry as a Design Engineer but have become disillusioned and frustrated at the lack of opportunity within my current company and the uncertainty of the automotive industry in general.
I am looking at a complete career change, but have no idea what my qualifications will allow me to do. I have a BEng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering and 8 years experience.
Has anybody else come out of this industry and what have you done? Furthermore, does anybody have ideas what I can do with my qualifications?
Any advice/thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Backed into a corner again

I seem to be backed into a corner again with my career current job and employer. I really am stuck and although I have a Union to had within my job they seldom seem to want to take my employer on so I end up taking what they have offered and putting up with things.
This time round my third time coming off maternity leave wanting to go back to full time work in my current job position of Team Leader but different hours to fit in with my family, as all three of my children are under 6 years of age, and from what I have been offered at present I loose my job status and a large salary decrease as I have been told that what I have requested would be detrimental to the business and they can not accommodate me within the business, but they seem to be able to work something out as long as I give up my Team leader position which I have worked the last five years to get, I’m devastated, as I thought this new government legislation was supposed to help people like me to be able to balance their family life with a career and not sacrifice one for the other, however from what I can gather this does not seem to be the case and no one wants to rock the boat, large employers are still seemly getting around this legislation without too much effort at all. Surely this is not right.
Any body else suffered this? Anyone had a similar experience? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated and if you are reading this and are going through or have gone through something similar I would like to hear from you too, as I for one am all for this legislation actually working as it should do and not ‘ appears ‘ to do so? As it is our children that suffer in the end (when we are not at the school play, sports day, music resiteal, parents evening etc) is it not…….?
