TUPE’d same job – less pay

My colleagues and I were tupe’d about 5months ago, we have since found out that even though we are doing the same job has our new staff colleagues, we are on a much lesser wage. This is causing alot of conflict, do we have rights even though we are still on our old contracts but going by some of our new employers contracts, a very confusing situation.

Back To School

Since finishing a PhD 6 years ago, I have been working for a engineering consultancy company. My job mainly involves developing scientific software and undertaking technical consultancy work. I now feel it is time to “move on” to something else.

One potential new career that interests me is software or web development. However, my current skills in this area are for old-fashioned programming languages and do not match those requested in job adverts. In short – I need to expand my skill base!

I have noticed a University MSc course that would provide me with these skills. Is going back to University to retrain a good idea (financial aspects aside), or is it generally better to learn new skills through on-the-job training?

Ill Health Holding Me Back

I am looking for a part time job after being out of work for health reasons, since I graduated in June 2006. My dilemna is that because since getting a degree my health has been too bad for me to work, or get voluntary work. I have worked in various bars and customer service jobs over my degree but other than that I haven’t got much ‘real’ working experience. However, i have very good GCSE and a level grades, and a degree.

I have always been asked about my health in interviews, which I have always been honest in answering… something along the lines of my health being a problem after graduation but that has now improved and that i feel ready to work. Also that i am looking forward to employment, keen to work hard and hopefully increase my hours in the future.

A few employers have said that they wouldn’t take the application onto the next stage because it has been so long since i last worked. Other applications have been rejected and I have only been given vague reasoning. If anyone has any advice for me i would really appreciate it. I know the topic of my health will always come up and i just don’t know if i am tackling it in the right way.

Thankyou, Faye
