Fresh Thinkers – See Tony Fish’s Presentation

Here we bring you Tony Fish’s presentation from Fresh Thinking 2 in which he guides us through the evolving and increasingly blurring landscape of information, data and privacy.

His guest posts ‘Who the Digital are You?’ and ‘You as The Product’ helped to lay the groundwork for his presentation, and here he tries to make sense of the growing complexities around Digital Footprints.

Four key points to look out for are:

Your Digital Footprint is bigger than you think. It’s easy to assume that an individual’s footprint is limited to what they say about themselves online…but it’s not. It also includes how your data is analysed and how you respond to it, what other people say about you, and how what other people say is analysed. For the recruitment sector this can have a big impact.

We aren’t ‘Free’ consumers of social networks. We may think that Facebook, Twitter etc are free platforms, but the data that we post is then used to sell back to us. We are the product with others analysing what we do and say, who we do it with and who we say it to. As Tony says “Google doesn’t want your identity, it wants the data that gives you your identity.

Research goes both ways. A Digital Footprint works both ways. You may research a candidate online before an interview, but they’ve almost certainly also researched the company and the interviewer too. When a candidate turns up for interview they’ve already bought into the company and the job.

Brand and loyalty are dead…we now look for trust. With so much information now available online, and with the ability to see what we say and what is said about us, there is a real transparency about so many of our businesses and commercial interactions. Recruitment is no different.

Enjoy Tony’s presentation! It may well be at the back of your mind the next time you post a status update!
