How to Sell Yourself when Job Hunting
Getting a new job is a bit like being a salesman with you as the commodity. Now, if you’re not a natural salesman, this can be a terrifying prospect, but it’s all about building self-confidence.
In today’s jobs market, where there is so much strong competition, you can be sure that there’ll be someone over-selling themselves at some interview, and probably landing the job because of their gift of the gab. If you’re normally afraid to say boo to a goose, you need to learn some tough-talking sales techniques now to keep you in the running at your next interview.
It’s not just in interviews either where you need to sell yourself – your CV, your cover letter, at networking events – all of these are opportunities for you to sell your achievements to prospective employers. This doesn’t mean being arrogant and boastful; rather it means talking about your strengths and your achievements, explaining what makes you unique and why you’d be good for the job.
If you’re struggling to find your own self-confidence, the good news is you can easily learn. Life coach Rebekah Fensome has some pointers to start you on your journey to self-confidence:
1. Building Self-Confidence Through Valuing Yourself
A first effective way to building self-confidence is to not devalue yourself. It’s important that you know yourself and what your best qualities are to build self-confidence. If you are reading this thinking you’re not sure what it is about yourself that you like then sit and think about it until you have a list of your top qualities. What makes you unique, what makes you the best at something? Keep this list and carry it around with you every day and read it for the next month. This is key to self-appreciation and will help in your quest to building self-confidence.
2. Building Self-Confidence by Not Thinking Negatively About Yourself
Another great way to build self-confidence is to not compare yourself to others that make you feel bad about yourself. Don’t put yourself down when you talk about yourself. Believe me this doesn’t help you to build self-confidence. People are attracted to people who have high self-confidence and passionately talk about themselves and their lives. Decide to inspire people rather than spending time putting yourself down in front of others. Remember that putting yourself down will never help you to build self-confidence levels and will just make other people feel uncomfortable around you.
3. Building Self-Confidence by Surrounding Yourself With Positive People and Influences
A third great way to build self-confidence is to observe people that are confident and see how they behave. This isn’t copying, it’s just taking on characteristics and adding them to your portfolio to increase your positivity. If you haven’t got self-confidence innately then decide that you will become a person dedicated to building self-confidence. Surround yourself with inspiring, uplifting thoughts. Reading about inspirational people is a great way to see how others have overcome things to get what they want, which all helps build confidence. Make it your mission to become unstoppable in your journey to building self-confidence!
These actions will start you off on the journey to building self-confidence and creating that magnetic personality that everyone wants to be around.
