Behavioural targeting: tutorial
Behavioural targeting boosts the effectiveness of your online campaigns by only showing your ads to the right people.
Sites that use behavioural targeting will:
- collect information on individual web users – the pages they look at, what they search for, even where they are
- choose the targets for your ads – the people whose browsing behaviour says they want what you have to offer
Lots of sites use behavioural targeting to improve their visitors' experience. Often it's used to show people products or offers that match other things they've bought or looked at.
Behavioural targeting benefits everyone. People see adverts they're interested in, and you don't waste your advertising budget showing ads to people who aren't interested.
How behavioural targeting works
Behavioural targeting is usually done using cookies, which track the online journey of every visitor to the site. These cookies put people into segments.
On Jobsite, we segment our users based on the jobs they look at and search for – one segment for each of our industry sectors and channels. So if you've got a marketing job to advertise, we know a whole set of people interested in marketing. And the same goes for admin, banking or telecoms.

Advertising across a whole network of sites
It's not only Jobsite's visitors that can see your adverts. We can also use our advertising network (dmg::media/digital) to display adverts on multiple sites. We follow Jobsite users as they browse other sites in the network – they might go to a news site or a motoring magazine, but they'll still see Jobsite ads.
If you go for our network option, you'll target Jobsite users as they browse over 60 well-known websites in the UK, reaching an estimated 72% of the UK online population (over 26 million online adults).
Big names in the network include:
- Mail Online
- Metro
- Prime Location
- Motors
Choose adverts or vacancies
You can use 2 types of display advertising across dmg::media/digital's portfolio of sites:
- Targeted display adverts (leaderboards, skyscrapers and MPUs)
You'll get the maximum exposure – users will see your ad on Jobsite, then encounter it again and again on different sites in the dmg::media/digital network. - Targeted vacancy listings
Target candidates cost-effectively – show them up to 3 live vacancies at a time. You can use MPUs or banner adverts. Just drop your vacancies into our template (it'll have your branding on as well as ours). All 3 vacancies must be in the same industry sector and run across the same time period.
